How to bulk update Salesloft from a CSV, safely
To bulk update Salesloft safely, decide how each row finds its existing record, decide per column whether the file overwrites or only fills blanks, preview every change before anything is written, and keep a way to undo it.
- Match on something reliable: Salesloft ID is safest, then email, then domain for accounts
- Decide per column: overwrite, or only fill blanks; and ignore empty cells unless you mean to clear
- Preview first, keep the old values, and know how you'd undo it
1. Decide how rows find their record
Most bulk-update mistakes are matching mistakes. Pick the most reliable key you have:
- Salesloft ID is exact, but means exporting from Salesloft first.
- Email is the usual choice for people. Watch for shared inboxes like info@, which can match several people.
- Domain for accounts, and to link people to their account.
- CRM ID or LinkedIn URL when your list came from elsewhere.
A row that matches more than one record should be skipped and flagged, never guessed.
2. Decide what each column does
- Overwrite or fill blanks? A territory change should overwrite the owner. A title from a list vendor should probably only fill blanks.
- Empty cells. Usually they should be ignored, not used to wipe a field.
- Tags and custom fields. Add to what's there rather than replacing it.
Note that Salesloft's own CSV import has limits on what it can change for existing records. Its help article has said that ownership of existing records can't be updated by CSV, so check Salesloft's help centre for what it supports today.
3. Preview, then run
Before writing anything, look at what each row will do: create, update (with old and new values), already up to date, or needs a look. Big files should be paced, or sent as Salesloft bulk jobs, so reps don't hit API limits mid-call.
4. Keep a way back
Keep the old value of every field you changed, and the IDs of every record you created. Then a wrong column is a two-minute fix rather than a weekend.
Pulsar Import matches rows by Salesloft ID, email, domain, CRM ID or LinkedIn, lets you choose per column, previews every row, can add people to cadences, and undoes the whole import for 30 days. See Pulsar Import
